The origins of this collection dates back to 2009 while I was enrolled in an experimental photography course at the Harrington College of Design, in Chicago. We were tasked to research, build, and implement an alternative way of creating photographs. Through the Viewfinder (TTV) photography is the technique I choose to explore and I have been experimenting with it ever since. This style entails using one camera to shoot through the viewfinder of a second camera to create a photograph. I have fallen in love with the square frame parameters, the imperfections of the ground glass, and shallow depth of field, all of which contribute to the composition of the photograph. After years of exploring subjects with the TTV approach (grand vistas, urban scenery, abstracts and macro) these are the outtakes. I fondly call them TTV Wanderings on Ground Glass.
As with my TTV Floral on Ground Glass Collection I have chosen to print these photographs on aluminum. I think the metal best represents the color and glow of the images as originally seen on the ground glass during the creation of the photograph. The off centered position of the image is another conscious decision made to create negative space around the subject forcing the viewer to pick where to focus his/her attention. Enjoy!
